This is my contribution to 's contest "L as a superhero." The first I heard of the theme, the idea of L as the Crow just wouldn't leave and I freaking had to draw this.
For those unfamiliar with the awesomness that it "The Crow," the basic premise is that Eric Draven and his fiance are murdered by a group of thugs. One year later, Eric is brought back from the dead by the power of a mystical crow, puts on black clown make-up, and goes out killing all the thugs who killed him and his fiance. As long as the crow is alive, he is completely invulnerable to any physical damage and has extra strength and stamina and the crow is also an extra set of eyes and ears.
The concept was originally created by comic book author J. O'Barr and turned into a movie with the late great Brendan Lee in 1994 (Brendan Lee was actually killed during the filming of it in 1993). There have been several other Crow movies and comics, but the one closest to my heart is the original.
I do think there are parallels between Eric Draven and L, both murdered as young men within minutes of someone they loved. Eric does look like a more muscular version of L in the comic book.
This was done in pencil and colored pencil with a tiny bit or marker and paint for the main headstone. L's pose is modeled after this photo of Brandon Lee [link] and the scene is inspired by a scene from the graphic novel. Also much of the information on L's headstone (save for birthday, death day, first initial, and surname) is based on my fanfics and has no root in canon.
L is the property of Ohba/Obata. The original Crow belongs to J. O'Barr with movie inspiration from Brendan Lee, director Alex Proyas, and Miramax Films.
Great work and I love the fire in the background. Ls anatomy is very good, especially his hands. Lovely color choices as well. Good luck in the contest!

That is one cool idea. Nice that you let your tortured brain rest by following through with it.

Thanks! The hair and the paleness was just a magnet for this idea I love it when ideas torture my brain though, it means they're active and have the potential for awesomness.

Thank you so much! Yeah the make-up wasn't just a few lines penciled in, there was a design to it. I sort of based it off the make-up from the original comics, but it was pretty much the same as the design used in the movie. And yes RIP Brendan. I remember hearing about his death right after it happened and just feeling for him even before I knew who he was. And I'm so glad you liked the tombstone, that had a special place for me

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
